Power Classification: 4P 5F
Numbers Carried: 1406, 31406
Built: January 1933 at Ashford

A later built N class, built 11 years after our oldest example there are not so many differences, other than that she is of the 1400 number series and has a later SR tender, and was never and SECR engine. Being the pride and joy of the Southern Railway Society, Wonder Rail have pledged to use her well and feel she will be well suited with our stock and surroundings.

Ex-SR V Class 30915 "Brighton" Owned By Wonder Rail

Picture
Wheels: 4-4-0
Power Classification: 5P
Numbers Carried: 915, 30915
Built: May 1933 at Brighton
Designer: Richard Maunsell

Status: Servicable
The 15th Schools Class to be constructed, this one being named after the place it was built and the public school. A later addition to the fleet but well suited, as in their later years after displacement from the Hastings line, these locomotives were used on services through Tunbridge Wells West to places such as Whimsey Hill. This engine has had a troubled start to its first term in preservation however reliability seems to be good after the spate of problems previously encountered.

She will occasionally run some trains as she is available for service, but is mostly on site for storage pending the completion of Redford Rails own layout. Painted in the BR Blue which some Merchant Navy's saw service in, she is an unusual site when in steam. Not currently available for loan unless discussed with Redford Rail

Wheels: 0-6-0
Power Classification: 5F
Numbers Carried:  C2, 33002
Built: May 1942 at Brighton
Designer: O V Bulleid

Status: In Service
The Q1 is of unusual design being made to save on metal during the war years. This example was the 2nd to be built and has been one of the newer additions to the fleet. Currently in her 1st boiler ticket since saving from scrap she serves very well being of a good size and free steaming. Once a Tonbridge locomotive and so would have been a visitor to Whimsey Hill in BR days.

Ex-SR Battle of Britain 34062 "17 Squadron" - On Loan from Redford Rail

17 Squadron, on loan from Redford Rail, is one of the only Rebuilt Battle of Britain class to run on preserved lines. She was to the line more for storage and to “run in” before Redford Rail has a facility to keep her. They have kindly allowed us to run her on service trains. She is a very useful and well suited to our Pullman trains. Not currently available for loan unless discussed with Redford Rail

Ex-SR Battle of Britain s21C155 "Fighter Pilot" - Owned by Wonder Rail

Numbers Carried:  21C155, s21C155, 34055
Built: February 1947 at Brighton
Designer: O V Bulleid

Status: In Service
The only locomotive not in a strictly true BR livery. Still baring "Southern" on her tender, but given the BR prefix of "s" to her number, she is in a post-war, "in limbo" early Nationalisation livery that was given to locomotives in 1948. It is planned to give her BR on the tender later on into her working preservation life.

Ex-LSWR T9 30310 - Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 4-4-0
Power Classification: 3F
Numbers Carried: 310, 30310
Built: April 1901
Designer: Dugald Drummond

Status: In Service
A South Western engine would not normally have visited this part of the Southern System however, the T9's ventured onto central and eastern sections in the latter days of their life. This one was often seen on local Lewes, Haywards Heath and Horsted Keynes services, occasionally running to Whimsey Hill. She was purchased to represent earlier BR days and suits the Blood and Custard Bulleid set very well.

Ex-LSWR M7 30051 Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 0-4-4T
Power Classification: 2P
Numbers Carried: 51, 30051
Built: November 1905
Designer: Dugald Drummond

Status: Awaiting overhaul
Often a visitor to Whimsey Hill in BR days, used on smaller trains and as a shunting locomotive. Being of only class 2P she cannot handle the bigger trains and so is not used as often as it is liked, perfect for small charter trains though! With the arrival of 30244, 30051 was been withdrawn pending heavy overhaul

Ex-LSWR M7 30244 - Owned By Wonder Rail

Picture
Wheels: 0-4-4T
Power Classification: 2P
Numbers Carried: 244, 30244
Built: March 1897
Designer: Dugald Drummond

Status: In Service
A new arrival, narrowly beating 30051 to the title of the smallest steam locomotive on the line. Often a visitor to Whimsey Hill in BR days, and was one of many M7's that were push-pull fitted. This member of the class was 1 of 2 to receive SR Malachite green with BR in sunshine lettering on the tanks in 1948 and carried this livery up until 1951.

Ex-LMS Class 2MT 41306 Owned By 41306 Locomotive Group

Wheels: 2-6-2
Power Classification: 2P/2FA
Numbers Carried:  41306
Built: 1951 at Crewe
Designer: H G Ivatt

Status: In Service
Rescued from a museum the USA, the 41306 Loco Group, plus Wonder Rail recently bought the locomotive to Whimsey Hill where she is currently stabled until a running agreement can be made, or an alternative home can be found for her. She is in good condition and needs little work to get her back into service, however the railway does not need another 2MT power classified loco, having a couple already. Talks between the Ouse Valley, 41306 Loco Group and various other railways are taking place to find a home for the engine.

Ex-LMS Class 4 Fairburn Tank 42073 - Privately Owned

Picture
Wheels: 2-6-4
Power Classification: 4
Numbers Carried:  42073
Built: 1950 at Brighton
Designer: C E Fairburn

Status: In Service
Originally housed at the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, 42073's owners decided to give her a spell at a Southern based railway and thus the Ouse Valley was chose as a good base. Currently providing a good service, her performance is right up there with the 2 standard tanks. It will be a shame for her to leave!

BR Class 4MT 80012 Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 2-6-4T
Power Classification: 4
Numbers Carried:  80012
Built: 1951 in Brighton
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: Requires Maintenance
The second, and older of the two 4MT’s. Just as useful as the other, but a later addition to the fleet. Like 80138, a 75F Tunbridge Wells West locomotive, and was exchanged for 80061. This locomotive is in need of some boiler work before returning to traffic.

BR Class 4MT 80138 Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 2-6-4T
Power Classification: 4
Numbers Carried:  80138
Built: 1954 in Brighton
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: Undergoing Maintenance
One of two 4MT’s based on the line. Very versatile and seen on large or small passenger, or goods workings. Capable of hauling the larger trains on the line. This locomotive was exchanged in a deal for 80097, in line with the company's policy of getting location appropriate locomotives. This loco was based at 75F Tunbridge Wells West and would have seen service on this line.

BR Standard 4 2-6-0 76069 Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 2-6-0
Power Classification: 4MT
Numbers Carried:  76069
Built: 1955 at Doncaster
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: Servicable
Very powerful for its size, and a very versatile locomotive. The one of the newest additions to the home fleet and proving to be worth every penny. Fits round even the tightest curves and pulls any length of train we can manage to hang behind her. Often seen on weekday service trains as she is cheap and easy to run, and popular with both crews and visitors alike.

Numbers Carried:  75033
Built: 1955 at Doncaster
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: In Service
Another new addition to the home fleet, bought in lieu of 76079, who has since left for the NYMR, just as good a performer as the aforementioned locomotive, if not slightly better. Just as at home on a short local passenger train as she is on goods or longer express type formations.

BR Class 5 73082 "Camelot" Owned By Camelot Locomotive Society

Wheels: 4-6-0
Power Classification: 5F/5P
Numbers Carried:  73082
Built: 1955 at Derby
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: Awaiting Overhaul
The 2nd locomotive to arrive on the railway, rescued from Barry and taken to the Bluebell Railway, the facilities were not available to restore the locomotive and a move was made to Uckfield where more space was available to make a start on her return to service. Now out of traffic for overhaul following her last appearance at the BR Gala. It is intended that this engine will run mainline in her next turn of service

BR Class 9F 92240 Owned By Wonder Rail

Wheels: 2-10-0
Power Classification: 9F
Numbers Carried:  92240
Built:
Designer: R A Riddles

Status: In Service
The biggest locomotive on the line, very out of place and slightly too big, however she has run. She is used as cover for bigger engines and has run some goods and special train. As she is not a Southern Based engine, it might seem difficult justifying her place here. Whether you love or hate her, she is here to stay due to both Wonder Rail CEO's love for the class of loco.

BR Class 33 D6553 Leased to SDTG

Wheels: Bo-Bo
Power Classification: Type 3
Numbers Carried:  D6553
Built: May 1961 in Birmingham
Designer: Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company

Status: Stopped for Maintenance
The younger of the two BRCW Type 3’s. In a different varient of the BR Green livery, she works similar services to her counterpart. Currently out of traffic awaiting attention to bogies and traction motors.

BR Class 73 E6003 "Sir Herbert Walker" - Leased to SDTG

Wheels: Bo-Bo
Numbers Carried: E6003
Built: May 1965 in Vulcan Foundary
Designer: English Electric

Status: In Service
Yet another Diesel, the newest type on the line. Being the 3rd ever built, she is of type JA. As Whimsey Hill has no 3rd Rail, her 600hp engine is put to good use on many goods services and some light passenger work, having a high tractive effort she will pull a large quantity of stock, but only for a short period of time.

BR Class 08 08648 Owned By Wonder Rail

Picture
Wheels: 0-6-0
Numbers Carried: D3815, 08648
Built: May 1959 in Doncaster Works
Designer: British Railways

Status: In Service
One of the famous and large class of 'Gronks' which can still be seen up and down the country. This one was bought by Wonder Rail for use in its works compound which is currently under construction. Whilst this is going on the locomotive was bought to the Ouse Valley Line for running in and is put to good use shunting and engineers works.
